Let's talk linen

Let's face it, we've all based our purchasing decision on 'coup de foudre' (love at first sight) at one point or another. Whether it's a little black dress, a pair of shoes, or a wonderful set of intricate bedsheets. However, we've also all had that moment of despair when we realized that the object of our affection was really REALLY high maintenance!

Enter Linen!
When it comes to beauty and practicality, linen takes the cake. Though it starts off being a little rigid, this type of fabric only gets better with time. Light and airy, linen is used to great success in bedsheets, curtains, cushions, hand towels and even clothes. The best thing about it though is how easy to manage it can be; it can be laundered with confidence!

So go ahead, get sloppy... and if you end up with stains here's a cheat sheet to bail you out:

  • Ink: Soak in milk, or in soap-and-ammonia mixture, and rub the spot.
  • Blood: Rinse immediately in cold water.
  • Fruit, coffee, tea and chocolate: Rub with alcohol, white vinegar and ammonia.
  • Candle wax: Scratch off dried wax, absorb residue with blotting paper and warm iron.
  • Greasy Stains: Rub with ammonia.
  • Red Wine: Rub immediately with sparkling water or white wine.

For those tough and stubborn stains:

  •  Soak the linen in a good washing detergent, or dissolving 3.5 oz. sodium borate in boiling water, then add enough cold water to yield 1½ gallons, and let soak for 1 hour.
  • Never use chlorine bleach which may damage the fibers.

Crafty fun at the Sttch studio!

We had lots of girly fun at the studio a couple of weeks back when we sat around out beautiful new wooden tables, and sewed and glued together wonderful designs for little Karma's fourth birthday! The whole team got involved as we made pompons out of tulle and decorated jars, chairs and tables with wonderful handmade brooches and pins! We even designed custom thank you notes and printed (and cut!) them out ourselves... Here are some 'In the process' pictures; stay tuned for the pics we took on the day (but that's for a later post)....

Kids Seating Corner (Natural Wood Child Size Chairs & Tables)

Children love to imitate adults in their play and they feel so adult like when they have furniture their own size.

We can create a world for our children with just a table and a few chairs. My two year old daughter launched her own craft school and restaurant around her corner. Seating her dolls and her friends and the make belief world begins. Her own art supplies and kitchen are close by to fetch when needed.

Enough with toxic plastic furniture for kids. We went natural, using untreated and unpainted wood with straw. The cushions on the chairs are filled with 100% cotton and upholstered the oriental way by hand. The fabric cover is also 100% cotton and comes in many colors.

Sttch Exhibiting @ Faraya M'zaar Festival Lebanon

I took Sttch (my home furnishing line) to exhibition grounds at the yearly five day Faraya M'zaar Summer Festival in Lebanon, August 2010.

Out on the grass, I showed Sttch's "Color Fiesta" and "Naturale" home collections.
The collections featured local heritage upholstery with vibrant colors using Cotton and ethnic & raw themes with earthy colors using Silk, Linen & Jute.

Both collections are true to sustainable living and Eco-friendly philosophy that I have integrated as part of Sttch. I achieve this by using natural materials and solid wood to make furniture and soft furnishings making my products live long and at the same time biodegradable.

Here are some photos from Sttch's booth at Faraya M'zaar:

Booth at night:

Faraya is an area up on the mountains famous for ski resorts in Lebanon. In the summer, Faraya is dry and cool unlike the coast, which is hot and humid. It is booming in the summer season where the Lebanese come to enjoy the cool weather in their mountain homes.

During the exhibition my family and I spent a week up there in a two bedroom Challet and my lovely friends came over to help around the booth too. We had a blast in this exhibition, even my two year old daughter found plenty of activities to keep her happy.

The exhibition featured famous brands as well as artisans and artists showing their work. I love the artisan section, very inspiring. The exhibition ended with a truly artistic fireworks show!
